Frida was an artist. No, she was not the internationally renowned artist Frida Kahlo, but her artistic talent was well known and respected at her school. Frida could transform the ordinary into the extraordinary. So it was no surprise when she arrived one morning at school wearing a shocking, but beautiful, pair of sneakers.
Her friend Ramon was astounded. His eyes widened as he took in the sight. “Where did you get those amazing sneakers?” he asked.
Frida lifted her foot. “These were plain white when I bought them. I decorated them myself.”
Word of Frida’s creation traveled to Ms. Tower, the art teacher who led the Textile Design Club. Ms. Tower approached Frida to invite her to host a workshop for students interested in designing their own sneakers. Grinning, Frida nodded in assent, and suggested that the students hold a fashion show to display their designs.
With Frida’s guidance, participating students gathered the materials they needed to embellish the sneakers - beads, buttons, markers, fabric, and glitter. Students then used glue to affix the materials to their shoes. The students would strut on stage as they showed off their designs. Thanks to Frida, this show would make artists of all the students!
